One of the most famous ballets based on Charles Perrault's fairy tale was first staged by the renowned choreographer Marius Petipa back in 1890 to the brilliant music of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky.
The classic production finds a second life in a modern performance by InternationalFestival Ballet dancers, and thanks to the bright costumes and colorful sets created by theatrical artist Vyacheslav Okunev, who worked at the Mariinsky and La Scala theaters, the audience is completely immersed in the fairytale atmosphere.
In the summer of 2022, the St. Petersburg Festival Ballet under the direction of Alexey Bogutsky changed its name to International Festival Ballet, thus demonstrating its stance on the war waged by Russia against Ukraine. The International Festival Ballet company employs a large number of Ukrainian dancers. Through dance the dancers convey to the audience the message about the value of life and love. There are 42 dancers in the company, who are graduates of the best choreographic schools: St. Petersburg Vaganova Academy, Kiev State Choreographic Academy, Moscow Academy of Choreography, Ufa Ballet School and Perm Ballet Academy.
The dance extravaganza is accompanied by live orchestral music performed by talented Festival Orchestra musicians from Moldova, Hungary, Ukraine and Latvia, under the baton of conductor Normunds Vaitzis. In addition to classical ballet music, Festival Orchestra's repertoire includes works by Ravel, Debussy, Rimsky-Korsakov, Massenet, Foge and Albegis, Gounod and other famous composers. Festival Orchestra has long established itself as one of the best ballet orchestras in Europe.
