At the end of May 2023, the band Mashina Vremeni celebrated their 54th anniversary. For more than half a century on stage, the band has repeatedly proved the relevance of their work to any era. In autumn 2023, audiences will have the chance to visit the legendary Mashina Vremeni concerts in Germany.
Such phenomenal longevity on stage is no accident: the band's irreplaceable leader and founder Andrey Makarevich has always been very exacting in his choice of musical material. The creative work of Mashina Vremeni falls outside the scope of a single genre: it includes elements of classic rock, rock and roll, blues and bard music.
In the 1980s, when Mashina Vremeni were banned from performing in Moscow, they toured all over the country and were hugely popular. The public literally carried the musicians in their arms. The nation's love even saved the group from repression after a scathing article entitled "Bluebird Stew", in which Mashina Vremeni's music was criticized by "angry listeners". Fans pelted the newspaper where the article was published with hundreds of letters defending the musicians, and the harassment stopped.
On the contrary, culture functionaries didn't like Mashina Vremeni: the episode with the band's performance was cut from Afonya because the censors perceived their appearance as too "hip".
Today, Mashina Vremeni is already a legend, which people orientate themselves towards and imitate. Refusing to compromise has often cost the band dearly, but this characteristic has helped Mashina Vremeni retain its identity.
The songs of Mashina Vremeni have always been distinctive for their topicality and timelessness. "Marionettes", "One Day the World Will Bend Under Us", "Bonfire" - today these songs, written in the 70-90s, have acquired a new meaning and new sound.
At the concerts in Germany, audiences will hear familiar songs as well as new compositions from the band's thirteenth official album, "In the Metre", which bear the hallmarks of our difficult times. Don't miss this epochal event!
